Smart People

Many “smart” people these days claim the Bible has no meaning today, that it’s just an ancient book, that it’s all nonsense.   It’s funny how, once again,  such an ancient, nonsensical book has a passage that speaks directly to us.  “For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”  For people who don’t have the Holy Spirit within them, who have not accepted the work of Christ on the cross, who are living only for this world and not for eternity, the Bible is nonsense!!   And for those of us who have accepted Christ as our savior this book is the very word of God, the guide of our life.   “For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.””   The more we learn, the more apparent it is that there are just things God is not going to allow us to know.  Just like Adam and Eve in the garden…there are just things that the creator of the universe does not have in his plan for us know.  We are not God.  We will never know everything it is we are trying to learn.  In our humanistic society we quest to know it all.   But that was never Gods plan.  For believers, that is a good thing.  “For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.””  We don’t understand why God chose us, but he did.  He chose us to be his people, his brothers, his messengers.  If we could understand, if it was something within our comprehension, would we accept it??  Or would we spend our days here on earth questioning the gift He gave us??   If we didn’t hit that point in our lives where the only way to look was up, where the futility of our own knowledge was clear, would we have accepted the work of Jesus on the cross??  Thank God for being dumb enough to have faith in Him!!

“For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.  For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.” Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.””
