Bright Lights

The Sermon on the Mount continued.   Jesus is directly addressing his disciples (and by extension us).  “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored?”  We are the salt of the earth!!  But what does that really tell us??  What is salt, and what is its purpose??  Salt is a seasoning, it’s purpose is to add flavor to whatever it is added to, to make the whole meal better.  All mankind is broken and sinful, corrupt.  We as the salt of the earth are to mix in with the rest of humanity, and be the seasoning that makes the rest of the meal more tasteful to God.  We are not to isolate ourselves, we are to be an active part of society.  We are to mix with believers and non believers alike, in the hopes that more will be affected by us living like Christ and turn to Him.  But if we lose our “christlikeness”, if the salt has lost its taste, then how will the rest of the world find Christ??
“It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.”  If we are not living for Christ, if we are no longer the salt of the world, then we are no benefit to that world.  If we are not actually living what we claim we believe, if we are not bearing the fruit expected of those living for God, then we ourselves will be judged more harshly than the world we are called to season.  “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.””
Jesus is the light.  We are Jesus to the world.  While as the salt of the earth, we are working inside all those around we are called to mix with, light is external.  We are to there for all to see.  Jesus has built his great church for the world, and he didn’t build it to be hidden or kept secret.  We are not to keep our faith quiet, shut up and leave everybody else alone.  We are supposed to be open and honest about who we are!!  What good does it do anyone (Christ included) if we go through life as “closet Christians”, not living as though we are living for Christ, not mixing in with the world to season it to Gods taste, not being the light shining for all to see and gravitate to??  Christ died so we can be that light in the darkness for the world to run to.  Are you that light shining on a stand, or are you under a basket??
