Living in the Light

When I first started reading the bible, my pastor told me to start with 1 John, because it lays out the foundation for Christianity in such a strong, yet beautiful way.  We are to live in the light, and let our sins be known in the light so that we too might receive the cleansing of the blood of Jesus Christ!!  “We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning, whom we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands.”  Remember Thomas insisting that he touch the resurrected Christ himself?  John reminds us we are dealing with eyewitness accounts to Jesus life, not just rumors and legends.  Not fairy tales.  No, Jesus was real, seen and touched by real people in real life.  “And now we testify and proclaim to you that he is the one who is eternal life. He was with the Father, and then he was revealed to us. We proclaim to you what we ourselves have actually seen and heard so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.”  And now because of the eyewitness accounts given to us, we have fellowship with the Father and the Son.  Imagine if these gospels had not been written?  “This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin. If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.”  It is only by the confession of our own sin, and the acceptance of Christ’ work on the cross as the ultimate redemption of our own broken sinful lives, that we have fellowship with God the Father and Christ the Son.  If we refuse to confess our sins and acknowledge our brokenness, if we choose to continue to live in our sins (in the darkness) instead of accepting the final atonement offered by Christ on the cross, instead of walking in the cleansing light, then we are proving that God is not working inside of us and we have rejected the salvation offered.  But, if we acknowledge the obvious, that we are broken sinners who need a savior, then we accept him and he accepts us just as we are.   If we humble ourselves, we will be lifted up!!

We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning, whom we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. He is the Word of life. This one who is life itself was revealed to us, and we have seen him. And now we testify and proclaim to you that he is the one who is eternal life. He was with the Father, and then he was revealed to us. We proclaim to you what we ourselves have actually seen and heard so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that you may fully share our joy. This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.”
