Dry Bones

This is quite a vision of the resurrection of the dead!!  The hand of the Lord was upon me, and he brought me out in the Spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of the valley; it was full of bones.   This is how we know it is a vision and not reality – he was brought out into the valley “in the spirit.”
And he led me around among them, and behold, there were very many on the surface of the valley, and behold, they were very dry. And he said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” And I answered, “O Lord God, you know.”  Bones everywhere!!  Ezekiel is nothing if not descriptive in in prophesies.  But he does get it right for sure – God is asking him if the bones can live, he just reflects it back to God.  By his power the bones certainly can not live.  But as we know, with God all things are possible!!

Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord.”   Again, the power of God on display!!  Only God has the power to bring dry, dead bones back to life.  What God is really using this to foreshadow, beyond the resurrection of the dead, is the restoration of Israel and the Jewish nation.  They had long before fallen away from God, and were scattered throughout their world.
So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I prophesied, there was a sound, and behold, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. And I looked, and behold, there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them. But there was no breath in them.  Like is said, Ezekiel is nothing if not descriptive.  God is calling his people Israel back together.  Their “body” will begin a re-formation. They will begin to look like a nation again, the people of God receiving the mercy of God.  But when they first begin to come back together, there will be no breath in them.  The prophet is seeing that while they will be re-formed physically, and begin to reconstitute their nation, they will not have turned immediately back to God,  though on the outside all will look good, underneath, spiritually, they will not have come back to God in their hearts.
Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.” So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army.   “Come from the four winds” – Israel was scattered, God calling them back together.  Ezekiel followed the commands of the Lord, and the body has come back to life!  The power of only God!!
Then he said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are indeed cut off.’   On their own power, the people of Israel can not resurrect their once proud nation.  On their own, they have no hope.  Their only hope is in the Lord.
Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will open your graves and raise you from your graves, O my people. And I will bring you into the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves, and raise you from your graves, O my people. And I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it, declares the Lord.””  A promise of God to resurrect the nation of Israel, to call his people back and give them their land again.  Apart from God, Israel is done.  They are scattered among many other nation, beaten and destroyed.  With God, there is hope of resurrecting their once great nation.   Israel needed a resurrection.  Sometimes we need a resurrection, in our recoveries, in our relationships, in our lives.  We know that doing things on our own only leaves us in the wilderness, hopeless and wandering.  When we are ready to resurrect our hopes and dreams, our very life, we know where to find the  power Ezekiel saw in this vision.  The power to overcome death.  It’s the power we can only find the God, embodied in His son Jesus Christ!!
