Happy Friday!! I had my own idea this of what to write about, but God intervened and this showed up in one of my reading plans. What a great piece from Romans. What a great reminder for a Friday morning!!
Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. An interesting call to remain out of all debt except the debt to love. We must always owe the debt of love. The one who loves has fulfilled the law – because the law is love in action, laid out as a matter of duty. To love God and love your neighbor. That’s why Jesus is the fulfillment of all the law, not the overturning of it. He loved us enough to follow His Father’s will all the way to the cross. “”For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 ESV. Love in action.
Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. So simple, yet so impossibly difficult. We aren’t under the Mosaic Law, but we’re not “off the hook.” We are held to a higher standard.
“”You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.” Matthew 5:38-39 ESV
“”You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,” Matthew 5:43-44 ESV
Turn the other cheek? Pray for, LOVE, my enemy??!! The revolution of Christ. Re-shaping the foundation of the world. Abel, who’s blood cries out from the ground, will prevail over Cain. The last shall be first, the first shall be last. The servant shall rule the world.
“Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.”
