Jesus…Plus??

Paul is writing here to the church he himself started in Galatia – and he’s not happy!!  Historically, it is not certain if this was written from Ephesus one year after Paul started this church, or from Corinth, approximately three years removed.  It is probably from Corinth, three years after Paul left the Galatians to continue his ministry.

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.   One year or three years – Paul clearly is stunned that the church in Galatia has been so quickly corrupted.  Corrupted by what whom??  it is believed it was a group known as “Judaizers” – they preached faith in Christ, PLUS circumcision and living under much of the Mosaic law.  Jesus PLUS.  A different Gospel, a different Good News.

We still find ourselves struggling with this to this very day.  We complicate that which is simple, we want to add our thoughts and opinions regarding salvation through Christ.   The Gospel is simple – Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary.  He suffered under Pontius Pilate.  He was crucified in our place, taking the sins of the world upon Himself.  He died on that cross, the sins of the world are forgiven through Him.  He was raised on the third day, proving that he was indeed the son of God.  He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the father.  It is through faith in Him that salvation comes.  It is from Him that His Holy Spirit comes to do the work on the inside that sometimes we think is for us to do from the outside.  “And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved….” Joel‬ ‭2:32‬ ‭ESV‬‬. “For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”” ‭‭Romans‬ ‭10:13‬ ‭ESV‬‬.  Everyone who calls on His name will be saved.  We forget this when we are out in the world and come across one of “those people” who do or believe “that,” whatever “that” is.  It is not for us to insert our opinions or thoughts or discomfort into the situation.  We believe in salvation through Jesus Christ.  We are to love as He loved.  Do we remember how much He loved the world?  We are to share His love, and give “them” the opportunity to call on the name of the Lord.  It is for Him to save and send His Holy Spirit to do the rest.

As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.   We are to simply to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Jesus came to save, not condemn.  When we reach out to “those people,” some will judge us just as they will judge those we reach out to.  But “those people” are the ones Jesus came for – and who are we without Him anyway?

“I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
