God so Loved the World!!

Happy Friday!!   Starting here with probably the most famous, beloved verse in all the bible.  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.   That’s the Gospel of Jesus Christ.   Simplistic and majestic at the same time.  God so loved the world, He came to us as a man, to live as we should live, to pay a price we should pay, to give us the eternal life in Heaven only He should have.  God so loved the whole world, not just the Jew.  Not just the Christian either.  We need to remember, that’s why we have the great commission to carry His message.  We are called to love as He loves – He loves the world, all people, not just some of the people…

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.  And that’s the Gospel!!  We don’t a serve a monster God, waiting up in the heavens, watching, angry at His creation for the sinful nature we acquired in the garden.  He came to us as Jesus of Nazareth, not to condemn but to save.  He could have stayed on His throne to condemn us.  Anyone using the name of Jesus Christ to condemn and tear down has completely missed the whole point.   No matter how “good” we are (or claim to be) we can’t be “good” enough.  Just like we are never too far gone into our own depravity and sickness to turn back to Him.  As Paul tells us – “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.” ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭2:20-21‬ ‭ESV‬‬. If we could save ourselves through our own works, why did Jesus die on the cross??  Likewise, if God was angry with me and wanted to send me to Hell because of who I am and what I’ve done, why come to us??  Why come through a virgin, walk the earth, perform miracles, live the sinless life, only to suffer a tortuous death hanging on a cross??   His entire coming into this world was the grace and mercy shown to us, the love of God for mankind.  He came to save us from ourselves, we just have to choose what we want for ourselves.

Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.   We choose our own destination.  As Christians, we don’t have to wonder whether we are going to Heaven or hell.  There are no scales of judgement – did I do a little more good than bad??  We either believe and are saved, or we don’t believe in Him and condemn ourselves.  Simplistic yet majestic.

And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.   We don’t have to wonder how we will be judged, The Judge Himself just told us.  He came into the world as the light – do we still choose darkness?  Do we choose to continue in our own ways, behind whatever walls we have built up?   Do we love the things of our 21st century world too much to give them up to come into his 1st century light?   We have so many ways these days to find “wicked” things to do, so many ways to keep those things hidden.  Except they are never hidden, they are always in His light.  Are we going to choose to stay in the shadows, or bring ourselves into our light.  He does not condemn, we do.

But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.  This world lives in spiritual darkness, it always has and always will.  We can use that darkness to hide the things we want it to hide.  What are you hiding?  What am I hiding?  All we have to do is choose to come into the light given by God himself.  He does not condemn you.  Will you condemn yourself?  Such a simple choice.  Isn’t it?

“”For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.””
