Glory and Power

At Celebrate Recivery Summit at Saddleback Church in Orange County California.  Wrote this very early today, forgive me for being thrown off schedule.  Hope you can get something from this.

Loving the psalms.  This is a psalm declaring the glory and power of God.

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard.   Creation reveals God’s supremacy.   Just as God uses His creation to teach Job to trust Him in Job chapters 38-41, so every day shows how powerless we are.  Every wave of the ocean, gentle breeze of the wind, in the bright sunshine, in the dim moonlight, we see the power of God controlling all things.  When the waves rock, the breeze becomes a howling wind, the clouds cover the sun and moon, and the storms come, we know we have no power.  We can just run for cover.  No matter how much power we try to claim for ourselves, there are just things that happen to us and around us that just lay bare, make clear for us that for being so powerful, we are utterly powerless over anything in our world, or even our own lives.

The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.  The law, the testimony, the precepts, the commandments, the fear, the rules of the Lord.  However you want to phrase it, they are perfect, sure, right, pure, clean, true and righteous.  They are also loving and personal. Since we know (we do know, no matter how much we deny) he has all the power and we have none, why do we reject His law?  We want to install our own, in our corrupt world filled with corrupt people, then we wonder why we end up with a corrupt, rigged society?

Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults. Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me! Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

Hidden faults.  Those that are unintentional, hidden from myself.  My pride.  My projection, seeing in those around me all my own faults.  My judgmentalism, making snap judgements of people I meet without knowing anything about them.  These are my struggle now.

As opposed to my old presumptuous sins.  My arrogant and willful disobedience.  My years (decades) of just doing what I wanted, because I wanted.  My years of willfully doing whatever I wanted, caring only for my own outward appearance.  Not caring about right or wrong.  Not caring about who I was hurting.  Denying to myself that I was hurting anyone.

Thank God for progress not perfection.

Thank God for our savior, my rock and redeemer.

“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat. Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults. Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me! Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.”
