I am With You Always

god-with-us

After three days of writing about a bigger picture some of you might not believe in and I don’t even totally understand, it’s time to write something we can all feel good about!
If you knew you were about to leave, and could only say one thing to the people you loved most, what would it be? Just assume you had time to think about it, pray about it, and knew it was coming. What would you say?
Jesus left us some famous last words, right before He ascended to the right hand of the Father. We know Jesus prayed – did He pray before leaving us these words? Did He put careful thought into what He wanted to say?

end-of-the-age
He knew He was leaving. So of course He put careful thought into the last words He would utter in His human incarnation. After all the miracles, all the sermons, all the lessons, the triumphs, the tragedies. After being tortured, humiliated, buried, and resurrected. After returning from all that to to walk with His disciples for 50 days, this is what He left us with – “Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew‬ ‭28:20‬ ‭NLT‬‬. Teach new disciples. We are always to carry out His great commission. But really, His very last sentence is And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen and Hallelujah!! “I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS!” Despite all the big picture spiritual warfare being waged, despite all of our personal weakness, despite the fact that our faith is weak, despite all the wrongs we have done, continue to do, and will do. Whether we see it or not, whether it seems sometimes that we are all alone, when all the things that hurt inside just seem like they are just going to overwhelm us – I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

i-am
Those two little words – I am. “I am” = God. All the way back to the burning bush when Yahweh first began to reveal Himself – “God replied to Moses, “ I AM WHO I AM. Say this to the people of Israel: I AM has sent me to you.”” Exodus‬ ‭3:14‬ ‭NLT‬‬. I am with you always.

““I am the Alpha and the Omega—the beginning and the end,” says the Lord God. “I am the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come—the Almighty One.”” Revelation‬ ‭1:8‬ ‭NLT‬‬. Never forget that Jesus was a real man. It is an undeniable fact of history that the man Jesus of Nazareth was real, and quite famous during His time. But we confess that not only WAS He real, Jesus IS real, right now, and He will come again!! He was, He is, and He is still to come!! I am with you always.

“Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I AM! ””
John‬ ‭8:58‬ ‭NLT‬‬. And then the crowd immediately wanted to kill Him. Why? Because He claimed the name of God as His own. I am with you always.

“Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us.” ‭‭
1 John‬ ‭4:11-12‬ ‭NLT‬‬. God is Love. If we are His people, as shown through our love for one another – “Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”” ‭‭John‬ ‭13:35‬ ‭NLT‬‬ – then not only is He with us, but He is IN us. I am with you always.

And yes, God is Love. Just as He loves us by being with us, maybe the best way for us to show love to another is by simply being present, with them. Just be present, during sorrows, during joys. Just as Christ told us that He is with with us.
He is the great I AM! He is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. He is the one who was, who is, and the one who will come again. And never forget – I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

  1. I wonder… are you familiar with the concept of “inclusion”? It is a literary device used in the Bible quite often, and certainly in the Gospels. And in Matthew’s case, he seems to have framed almost the entire book in one. The passage you site here is actually the other bookend which joins Matt. 1:23 in framing all that goes between! In a sense, Matthew’s whole gospel message is: God is with us – and certainly is characterized thusly all through.

    Just my 2 bits…

    1. No, never heard of “inclusio”. Lol my auto correct tried to “fix” it too. I’ll have to look it up, maybe I can learn a little something. Never hurt anyone…thank you for the insight.

  2. God is with us always. I came back to read this post again. During my college years after witnessing a very ugly and unethical side of church business, I left. I walked away from church and walked away fro God. Years later thanks to the kind and gentle invitations ( which I declined for months) of a couple to join them in church, I did. This couple over all of those years never stopped praying for me. Now it is so clear that during my wandering years, God never left me. God grants us free will. God was patiently waiting for me to exercise my free will and return to His loving embrace. Excellent post!
