My Brother

OXYGEN Volume 09

Here is a passage from Matthew, telling us about how He viewed His earthly family and His heavenly family. For Jesus, the eternal always took precedence over what is obvious here on earth. The Kingdom of God is the family He is building.

As Jesus was speaking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him. Someone told Jesus, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, and they want to speak to you.” Here in Matthew, it doesn’t tell us why his Mother and brother were there to see him, but in Mark it tells us. “When his family heard what was happening, they tried to take him away. “He’s out of his mind,” they said.” Mark‬ ‭3:21‬ ‭NLT‬‬. “….Then Jesus told them, “A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his own family.””‭‭Matthew‬ ‭13:57‬ ‭NLT‬‬. Jesus’ own family did not believe in Him until much Later in His ministry, possibly not until after His resurrection.

Jesus asked, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” Then he pointed to his disciples and said, “Look, these are my mother and brothers. Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother!” Jesus never rejected His family, just as He has never rejected a sinner. They eventually did accept that He was who He said He was. They thought He had lost his mind, but Jesus had a much larger family in mind.

All men and women are the children of God. God loves both the Saint and sinner. But it’s when you’ve accepted Christ into your life and heart that you truly enter into brother and sisterhood with Jesus Christ, the Son of God. It is a loyalty which surpasses all earthly loyalties, which takes precedence over the dearest things on earth.
It is a great wonder that when we give ourselves to Christ we become part of a family that stretches to the ends of the earth, and into eternity. We become the very brother and sister of the Son of God.

“As Jesus was speaking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him. Someone told Jesus, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, and they want to speak to you.” Jesus asked, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” Then he pointed to his disciples and said, “Look, these are my mother and brothers. Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother!””

  1. Here’s my two bits, for whatever that’s worth…

Jesus has been running around collecting “disciples” for his new messianic movement. And for all the world, to anyone living in Galilee or Judea, that looks like a revolt getting started (maybe not to us modern western Christians, but to them… it looked like Jesus was getting ready to pick (or pique) a fight… a fight that would lead to revolt against Rome at the least.

When his family shows up, they are trying to make the insanity defense. They are throwing a wet blanket on Jesus’s gospel and mission, but not because they hate God or anything like that, but because they know the kind of talk and actions Jesus (their son and brother) is engaged in will likely get him killed.

    And… of course, it does.

    1. Another thought on this is that Jesus has a Jewish mother – even though she knows her son is the Son, she worries for him as any Jewish mother would. Rather than “throwing a wet blanket” on the gospel, I think there is also precedent for her attempting to care for him. He hadn’t eaten in days, and she wants to nourish him because she knows she will not have him for long.

      1. She certainly had many signs from his infancy and preteen years that we are told she held in her heart. So she was not unaware. Whether she believed or not…but Mark does say they thought He was mad.

    2. They certainly didn’t hate, but neither did they recognize Him as God. The point of that is that they simply couldn’t see past their perception of Him as simply son or brother. Certainly not THAT special…the living breathing personification of God Himself

  2. The story of the family forms one of the literary devices known as a Markan Sandwich. There are several of these in Mark, where a story gets interrupted by another story and then the first resumes but is now influenced by the middle one. And this story gets interrupted by the scribes from Jerusalem who claim his power is from Beelzebul. So, you have his own family saying he is nuts and the “religious leaders”, as we like to call them, saying he works for the devil. Everyone is missing the mark, missing the point, not realizing just exactly Whom they are dealing with here (which is the driving theme of Mark’s whole gospel).

I think there is a cautionary lesson here about well meaning people short-changing God’s prophets, messengers, and ministers… if they do it to Jesus, they can do it to anyone! They called the Son of God crazy and the devil. This was probably due to their fear of really dealing with God.

But now I am up to 4 bits, and I will quit.

I love the fact that this blog digs into the actual Bible. BY FAR, most Christians don’t even do that. The fact that you may or may not share my views is a distant secondary issue, important, but not nearly as important as the fact that you actually dig and share the actual Word of God.

    I am blessed.

  3. I was just thanking God earlier that I have been made one of the many brothers (sisters) of which Jesus Christ is the firstborn. We have brothers and sisters all over the world. Heaven will be filled with every nation, tribe, tongue. I look forward to that day.

        1. I appreciate the original comment, but I had to delete it. I appreciate your interest and welcome your comments/questions, but will respectfully ask that you “keep it clean”. No judgment, we all (at least most of us) have used certain words in life. But I would really like to stay clean in this forum.

BTW – what about that post marked me as a skater? Just curious…
