If I was church-calendar correct, this would be a message of epiphany, a message of magi finding the child who was born king. But I’m not, and the message is not. Hey, I’m only one day past the twelfth day of Christmas finishing talking about Christmas. But who wants to stop that anyways??
So an angel comes to us and says
Why does heaven say to us
Fear is what put us in the cave. Fear is what keeps us in the cave. The cave is fear. We’re afraid. We’re afraid of God. We’re afraid that somehow God is mad at us, upset with us, angry with us. We’re afraid that He’s an angry God and we’re in His hands and who knows what horrible thing is going to happen to us.
It is Satan who is casting those shadows on the wall. That’s Satan who is telling you that what you need to do is be afraid of God because He does not have your best interests in mind. He’s very angry with you and very offended at you and who knows when he might just break out against you and harm you?? So we are afraid of God because we’ve been informed by
We’re down in the cave. Afraid of God, afraid of each other, we live down in that cave of fear, then an angel comes down from heaven bearing good news of great joy.
Christ has come, Messiah, what does that mean, the
The world’s true king (
Pharaoh, Alexander, Caesar, and all the rest were kings
I know the way out of the cave. This is not reality, this is not what you’re called to. This is not the way to live. There’s a whole world up there, you can’t even imagine it. In fact you really can’t imagine it, but follow me and I’ll show you.
Jesus leads us by inviting us, calling us, showing us the way out of the cave. But, Jesus will not force us to leave the cave. That’s the difference between Jesus and Pharaoh, Alexander and the rest. They do everything by force. They force everybody to do what they want. Jesus is King, but not that kind of king. He’s a truer king. The kingdom of God is without coercion, so Jesus
Glory to God in the Highest, and in earth peace, goodwill among men
There is no way to peace, peace is “the way”. Jesus is peace.
A lamb is in charge, and we must follow the ways of the lamb. We don’t have to hate. We don’t have to fight. We don’t have to fear. We can have goodwill toward our sisters and brothers, toward all our fellow humans. You’re a child of God, but there’s others. You’re not an only child. To view God’s other children through the lens of fear and competition is the way
Instead, our savior King teaches us to view others through the lens of love and
So, let’s repeat the sounding joy, everyday of 2019 and beyond. If we can rejoice through the Christmas season, we can rejoice the rest of our lives. I want us to give witness to Christ the King by choosing to rejoice. Rejoice and fear not. Rejoice and fret not. Rejoice and fight not. Give up fear, fretting, and fighting. Don’t be afraid, don’t worry, don’t get on Facebook and get into fights (even about your football team).
Do this in honor of the King who was born in the cave to lead us out of that mess where we sit and watch illusions on the wall. Plato’s allegory of a cave, where we sit in the dark and watch illusions on the wall. Did he mean television? Makes me wonder. Jesus leads us out of that into the true light of day.
By the way, at the end of his life they tried to put Jesus back in the cave. In fact, they did put him back in the cave. But he only stayed there three days. But that’s the story of Easter, isn’t it?
“In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!””
